Tamron really has their focus on the Sony mirrorless camera users. The existing Tamron lenses for Sony mirrorless, the 28-75mm f/2.8 and 17-28mm f/2.8 have been quite successful due to their superb quality and competitive pricing. That is why many users have been awaiting the lens that would complete this zoom lens trinity, a fast telephoto lens, certainly.
Today, Tamron announced the development of the Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD. However, aside from that, a lot are still yet to be revealed by the third-party lens brand. In addition, however, they finally revealed the 3 new prime lenses for the Sony mirrorless line-up. The 20mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 (Model F050), 24mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 (Model F051), and 35mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 (Model F053). The 24mm and 35mm lenses will be available on November 20th and the 20mm will be available in January 2020. All three prime lenses share the same price tag of $349.
The three prime lenses all have a 67mm filter diameter and are all below 220 grams. They offer a maximum magnification of 1:2 and minimum focusing distance of 0.11m ( or the 20mm), 0.12m (for the 24mm) and 0.15m (for the 35mm lens). They feature a moisture-resistant construction and a flourine coated front element that helps avoid smudges on the lenses. All three primes are available for pre-order while the telephoto lens still has no ETA.
I really wish they'd compromised on the other end of the zoom range for the 70-180. I'd be a lot more interested in a 90-200 than I am in a 70-180.
Why? You can crop in, you cant crop out. Doesn't really make sense
Mainly because when I use lenses like this I’m normally all the way at the 200 end. My 24-70 gets me to the wider end of this lens and since I don’t use the focal lengths between that and say 160/170 and up very much I’d rather loose out there. As for cropping in sure I could do that, but by that logic why bother with a zoom lens at all. I’d rather do it optically and preserve my resolution for other things.
Agreed. Also it would be in keeping with the 17-28 and 28-75 to at least start at 75mm. I'm not an optical engineer, but I'm guessing that removing range at the wide end allows for more latitude in developing a fast, compact lens with more range on the telephoto end.
$350 a pop is within most shooters as well. I wonder if they'll put other mounts on these lenses, I suspect so.
