Sigma's Flagship Just Got Better With the 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II

Sigma’s flagship lens is evolving with the new 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II | Art for L-Mount and Sony E-mount mirrorless systems. Fully redesigned to take advantage of the latest technologies and improve image quality throughout the entire zoom range, the lens is lighter and smaller than its previous incarnation and boasts some serious features.

Expanded Feature Set

This second generation of the lens now includes a de-clickable aperture ring to bring it in line with recent developments found on other Sigma lenses, plus a new second AFL button on top of the lens barrel for easier access when shooting portraits. Both of the AFL buttons can be assigned to a range of functions via the menu on compatible cameras. The lens also features Sigma’s linear HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motor for the AF actuator, which provides a three times faster drive speed than the previous model.

The lens is weather-resistant and includes a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element. There’s a zoom locking switch that locks at 24mm to prevent the lens from extending unintentionally under its own weight. The petal-shaped hood also features a locking system for secure attachment.

With these additional features, you would expect the lens to be larger and heavier than its predecessor. Instead, it's approximately 7% smaller and 10% lighter, weighing in at 745g and making it even more portable.

  • Lens construction: 19 elements in 15 groups (6 FLD, 2 SLD, 5 aspherical elements)

(The above figures are for the L Mount)

Judging by the sample images, of which there were many more, the lens is going to improve on what is already an outstanding lens in terms of all-around image quality. With these new features and improved performance, you would expect the lens to come with a hefty price tag. But no, the lens, at the time of this publication, is retailing at UK SRP £1,179 when it goes on sale on May 30, 2024. I, for one, am looking forward to reviewing the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II | Art for Fstoppers.

I'm sure it's an excellent lens ..... but "flagship"???

I would consider Sigma's flagship lens to be the 500mm f5.6 for a prime, or the 60-600mm f6.3 for a zoom.

I just have trouble thinking of a little 24-70mm as a "flagshjip" lens, unless your talking about some small obscure lens company like Laowa or something.
