Lots of Exciting Canon Lenses Are Likely on the Way

Rumors are swirling in the photography world about Canon's plans to release four new fast prime lenses in the first half of 2024. According to sources, Canon is developing four new L-series primes that will give photographers faster glass and improved performance for shooting in low light and creating beautiful bokeh.

The new lenses reported to be on the way include a 14mm f/1.4, 24mm f/1.4, 28mm f/1.4, and 35mm f/1.4, with the 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm featuring Canon's image stabilization technology. These focal lengths would give photographers a range of wide angle to normal perspectives with Canon's respected L series optical performance. 

Landscape, architecture, and astrophotography shooters are often the targets of 14mm lenses, used for capturing sweeping vistas and dramatic foregrounds. Meanwhile, the 24mm f/1.4 delivers a versatile wide angle view great for a range of applications. Meanwhile, the 35mm f/1.4 is one of the most classic and versatile options out there. Finally, 28mm is a popular alternative that offers a wider field of view than 35mm without as much of the distortion that becomes noticeable at 24mm. 

Rumors indicate Canon may include some undisclosed new technology in at least one of the new primes. While the details remain a mystery, Canon has been at the forefront of lens innovations over the last few years, and I will certainly be interested to see what they come up with. 

Of course, Canon has yet to officially confirm their plans regarding these lenses. But with Canon's RF mount mirrorless system gaining steam, filling out the wide end of the RF range with traditional wide angle primes makes a lot of sense. I strongly suspect we will see at least the 14mm, 24mm, and 35mm relatively soon. Hopefully, we will hear more soon.
