Sony now has two newer high-level supertelephoto zoom lenses on the market, and since they have overlapping zoom ranges, you might be wondering which is the right choice for you. This great comparison takes a look at both lenses and gives lots of sample photos to help you decide which is right for you.
Coming to you from Alpha Shooters, this great double video comparison takes a look at the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS and FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS lenses to help you decide which is the right one for you. I'm currently stuck in the same quandary myself, with the allure of the extra reach of the 200-600mm (and its price that sits $500 below its cousin) tilting the scales, but with the 100-400mm offering two thirds of an extra stop (at the wide end, one third at the tele end) and showing decent performance with a 1.4x teleconverter. It is not an easy decision, but at the same time, it seems one will likely be happy with either lens.
Check out part two of the comparison below:
Do you own either of these lenses? Let me know what you think of them in the comments! (Seriously, help me decide!)
Many thanks for the share Alex Cooke. Have you made up your mind yet? I still own both lenses and I'm trying to keep hold of both but if I had to let one go it would be the 100-400. The extra reach of the 200-600 and sharpness at 600mm f/6.3 compared with the 100-400 + 1.4x at 560mm f/8 is definitely beneficial for wildlife shooters, the smooth internal zoom is really nice too. Although if you travel a lot the 100-400 will be a lot more comfortable in your backpack. There's lots of discussion on these two lenses in the Sony Alpha Wildlife Shooters Group that I run on Facebook, with advice from many members who own both lenses. You might find it helpful or you might find yourself even more confused :)
My pleasure! Really enjoy your channel. I think I’ve decided on the 200-600; that extra reach would be so useful to me in a few situations!! Your super helpful video made the difference for me! :)
You won't be disappointed with either lens Alex but if you need the reach then the 200-600 is a no brainer and you'll even have money left over to go towards the 600 F4 :) Glad to hear that my video helped. Hope to do something similar between the a7R IV and a9 next.
