Canon has released a huge range of impressive and expensive lenses, but not every creative can afford or wants such lenses. That's why it's great news to see the company exploring more affordable full frame lenses, as detailed in some new designs.
The designs, found by Canon Rumors, signal an emphasis compact, budget-friendly prime lenses, a move that could diversify the landscape of photography gear for both amateur and professional photographers. The proposed lenses – RF 15mm, 18mm, and 19mm f/2.8 – would sit nicely beside the $249 RF 16mm f/2.8 STM.
What sets these lenses apart is their likely affordability and portability, coupled with the promise of decent optical performance, at least if they're anything like the 16mm f/2.8. Of course, they will not match the resolving power of more expensive lenses, but they would offer a practical solution for those seeking quality and versatility without a hefty price tag, a philosophy that is quickly growing in popularity.
Of course, a patent's existence doesn't guarantee a product eventually making it to the market, and we certainly wouldn't see all three of these designs. However, it is nice to see Canon devoting some attention to creating more affordable and pragmatically minded lenses. Hopefully, we'll hear more soon!
I want an affordable 20mm f2.8 for video, but an 18 or 19 would do. IS would be a plus.
