Canon has just announced a new lightweight glass option for photographers, the new RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM Lens.
For many street photographers and documentarians, the 35mm lens is a staple of their workflow. Wide enough for many scenes without adding noticeable distortion, the focal length can be utilized for a variety of subjects. Today, Canon announced a new addition to this focal range for its mirrorless camera users, the RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM. With a wide aperture of 1.4, the lens lets in a lot of light. And coming in a relatively small package, it is built for all-day use with minimum fatigue. The lens is built to reduce focus “breathing” and utilizes two aspherical lens elements and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements to deliver high-quality optical performance.
The lens has two cool additional details which will make it quite useful to photographers and filmmakers. First is the built-in iris ring. Not something you see a lot in the mirrorless age, this will allow you to change the aperture manually on the lens rather than through the camera control, which is especially useful in many filmmaking situations.
The lens also comes with a detachable rear filter holder. So, if you are someone who likes to mount your filters between the lens and the sensor as opposed to screwing them on the front, this system is built especially for you. Of course, if you still prefer the traditional way, this lens sports a 67mm filter thread for screw-in filters which can be used.
Canon says this lens is going to be the first in a new series of hybrid fixed focal length lenses and is expected to start shipping in July 2024 for a suggested retail price of $1,499.
